5425610 western pine beetle Dendroctonus brevicomis Based on the open, branching gallery patterns and large exit holes, combined with the pattern of tree mortality (all trees in the same stage of foliage fade), we concluded that the primary bark beetle present was the western pine beetle, Dendroctonus brevicomis.  This species is known to frequently kill drought-stressed pines in the Davis Mountains.  We were unable to collect any adults to confirm the species. To my knowledge, however, the southern pine beetle has never been collected from the Davis Mountains, although it attacks ponderosa pine in Arizona and New Mexico

0013081 southern pine beetle Dendroctonus frontalis Small, high-winged aircraft are used for aerial detection of southern pine beetle infestations and other forest pests. Note survey maps mounted on roller devices for sketch-mpping.
0013082 southern pine beetle Dendroctonus frontalis Aerial sketch map with flight lines. Flight lines are drawn onto 15-minute quadrangle maps for southern pine beetle detection flights. During flights, the location, size, and ground check priority are recorded on the map when new SPB infestations are located.
0013087 Ips engraver beetles Ips spp. Scattered single pines with discolored foliage indicate trees attacked by engraver beetles (Ips). Distinct from a multiple-tree southern pine beetle infestation.
